So I just came back from PLA 2012 in Philadelphia, and it was AMAZING! Granted, it was my first library conference, but I was in love. Yes, it was exhausting to have information constantly being thrown at me, but it was also so exciting to hear about what different libraries around the country are doing. For example, the Brooklyn Public Library has a Multicultural Internship Program that gives teens the opportunity to gain experience working in a library. There’s also the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Ready to Read Corps, which provides early childhood literacy skills to families in need. And then there’s LEAP into Science, which is a partnership between the Franklin Institute Science Museum and the Free Library of Philadelphia that links hands on science activities with children’s literature. Furthermore, it is now being expanded to ten additional sites across the country! It’s definitely been inspiring to hear the different ways they’ve been serving their respective communities.
